R2-R In a Strange World

Pablo Rincon

The purpose of this post is twofold:

-To reassure you that work carries and the second chapter of "IN HELL" will release in the first half of this year.

-To share some cool art with you and provide some tasty food-for-thought for the readers of this blog.

Let us start then.

We get a TAD CATTY/BITCHY in this one, reader beware.

I want to become seriously proficient in 3DCG. To produce darling little figures and images for the merriment of all.

I remember being FLOORED by "Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children". When I first discovered that film, many years ago I even considering ditching drawing and taking up 3DCG full-time. I really really impressed a great deal. To this day I find it glorious. I of course didn't abandon 2D art and chose to persevere in the arduous path of "learning to draw comics fucking Hell"... but I´ve never forgotten the impression 3DCG left on my young soul. Early 3D videogames like "Mario 64" as well felt like total revelation to an even younger Geladaa. Not the kind of thing you forget.

Nowadays, when I look at 3DCG, be it in movies as special effects, in animated films and shorts, in videogames or as artworks/renders on the web, I am rarely impressed. I sorely miss the sense of awe those earlier 3DCG products had. I mean, it's not that long ago that we got total pharaonic MASTERPIECES like the "Bayformers" films or Peter Jackson´s "King Kong"... but the stuff we get nowadays... nowadays most 3DCG stuff seems to be the product of technicians, not artists.

It is a well-known fact that "special effects" in movies have gone down. Way way down to Chinatown. They don´t "wow" anymore. Movies SUCK in general NOWADAYS. The photography, the feel of them is so weightless and lame and dim... and the 3DCG effects match that "vibe" perfectly. It´s depressing to the point of circling back around and becoming interesting:

"interesting"
"interesting"

Videogames are even more depressing. I think there is a link between this "made by technicians" id est ""people that think that if they do everything "correctly" then the result will be good"... people ever obsessed with "realism"... I think there is a link between THAT and "cultural products made by producers, not artists". A machine-world devoid of SOUL, a shell without a ghost.

The tiny flag pushes the whole into "proper comedy" territory
The tiny flag pushes the whole into "proper comedy" territory

Mindless technicians doing the bidding of mindless producers, with nary an artist in sight!

As you must be able to guess, my diagnosis is that rampaging nihilism/communist is to blame. I grant that I might be simplifying things a bit there, but that, I believe is the main if not the sole, culprit.

Modern 3DCG artworks in the west are lame in a similar way. Again, these are technicians for the most part. Though free as they are from the direct influence of "producers", they produce things that, though certainly not inspiring, aren´t as depressing as Marvel SLOP and DEI games...

Stuff like this, endless oceans of stuff like this:

Durr-hurr, me DETAILED!
Durr-hurr, me DETAILED!

I think this kind of thing is the result of people that are endlessly stuck in "exercise mode". They don't really dare or maybe don't even WANT to produce proper ART. They are just in love with the technology, and work as if it was a matter of filling out answers in a questionnaire. They just, unthinkingly, DO. They just try to DO and DO WELL, while trying to think as little as possible about WHAT to do and WHY do it.

In another time, this would feel merely childish. All these STEAMPUNK MECHA-ORCS and co. would feel like the product of young people learning a language. Doing exercises while learning a language.

Nowadays, they look like AI SLOP. Human-produced AI slop lol. I guess it's normal since AIs are not wholly unlike "a child learning a language".

"This is what Frazetta used to do right" ONLY NOW IN 4K!!!

No, CHILD, this is NOT what dear Frank Frazetta used to do.

It´s not, of course, a matter of themes/content. Steampunk mecha-orcs can be wonderful. It´s a matter of putting forward a coherent proposal, a worthy contribution, something NEW, something that says something. It's a matter of rising above the level of "art-school exercise" and producing something that reflects a thirst, a real creative desire, not just a proficient handle of the software/basic anatomy etc.

Romina Saint of the bud
Bless their hearts

Thankfully, one last bastion of virtue and artistic might remains, bravely attempting to take up the slack for the rest of the lame, commie-blighted world:

Area 11 of course!

It´s funny that you can compare and contrast stuff that is very similar, on paper, only to notice how completely different it really is, in actuality. Both groups, elevens and let´s say "the rest of mankind" (notable exceptions notwithstanding) as they work on what is ostensibly the same thing "RPG/D&D SHIT" but they do it thoughtfully, gleefully, knowingly, bitingly and produce proper art instead of bungled exercises.

The scarlet-rod-ridden darling pasted above is certainly a great example of this.

I, of course, aim to produce proper art as well.

I AIM to do that, it is of course, up to each individual to judge whether I succeed or not.

Here is my latest effort in the field then, for you consideration:

A little virtual diorama featuring IN HELL´s "R2-R: Knight of the Holy Void"...

Each of the following elements thoughtfully, knowingly arranged so as to produce a piece that is worthy of your erudite, critical, active gaze:

-Rainbow-colored coral structures

-Rainbow-colored crystals

-Heraldry

-Empty suits of armor come alive

-Spectral chains

-The primal sea

-St. Peter and his upside-down crucifixion

-The letter "G" and its resemblance to the spiral shape

-The link between armored knights and robots, the etymology of the word "robot" (linked to the concept of "slave")

-The dominance of the word over flesh

and many other concepts that result from the way in which these concepts are combined.

Yes, my 3DCG works and my 2DCG artworks could stand to be more technically impressive. I am not Velazquez, I am not some ILM/WETA guy. Which is why I strive to fill them with that which is nowadays wondrous though-provoking thoughts. I think that´s a worthy trade and I hope you´ll agree.

With that, I leave you for now, take care...

Catch you later.

Oh, and remember to REGISTER for free comics and updates! It will bring JOY (the good kind not the commie kind) in the future if you do!
